Juries §1. defects Were these accompaniments concomitants circumstances
inseparable from the consti institution, system of a
Jury, horror and detestation would be its due
much rather than fondness and admiration.
Yet it is with all these foul blotches of on it that
it has so long been the object of general idolatry: It is with all these imperfections in its head, and without any exception or draw-back on account of them, that it has been received the incense of Blackstone and du its most enthusiastic of its , Blackstone & J. De Lolme.
and it is to admiration thus blind that it stands
indebted for all the testimony presumption that opinion
can furnish in favour of its excellence.

Our circumstance may in some degree have
warped my judgment: It is among the number of my misfortunes, and when looking I look round I am almost tempted to say my singularities, that neither the powers of
an academical education nor those of the superadded powers in a legal education
have been able to subdue in me that ungracious
handkering after truth which has been pronounced
by a wise proverb to be the characteristic
of fools and children: neither perjury
nor even simple falshood can stand offer themselves before me
without exciting a mingled sentiment emotion of aversion
and contempt, in whatever be the company they be found: Custom so far from reconciling me to it irritates me against it but the more.
so compleatly has so much good instruction and
good example been thrown away upon me. But
setting aside this error, prejudice weakness if it be one, and even setting
aside that part of the system which has drawn it forth
there will remain in perfection enough to shew that the ardency of affection which has displayed itself in the subject zeal in this quarter has trad been much busier than knowledge. ardency zeal
