and there can not be a greater the people
merit, and depose him avowedly for this cause. What
Judge after this will dare to invade the liberty
of the people?
But is not your Judge sworn, and
that in the strictest manner to pay obedience
to the law? He is so: but to what law? to
a law that exists. and I have shewn that on
this head no such thing as a law exists or can possibly exist, until a general law is made.
But suppose a general law made— Suppose the
legislature wrought up to such a pitch of blindness
in profligacy as to give words a form to the extravagancies
that have been floating in the minds for this century and a half
of lawyers English Judges and turn it into a law. What is
the consequence? Can liberty then be preserved to upon your plan now
the press without perjury? Very bad <add>I confess in any case, but that of the retractation of the law.</add> Perjury I am sorry
to say it or else the utter or an interregnum of in
justice for want of a Judge, or the utter destruction
