Prison Lawyers what Priestly or what Hume ever illuminated the
paths of law ? Why is it that the very idea
of a rational or regular system of legislation
has been lost causing lawyers since the time of
that Bacon who in his vertices as well
as vices seemed destined to have nothing in
common with his profession or even with other
men ? Why is it that for the last crude
ideas that they were ever given all to entertain of
the advantages of their own constitution , for
nothing is said of its defects for of its defects nothing was ever said by any body till the li new lights burst in from France the English are indebted
not to an English but to a Genevan
lawyer ? Why is it that in so important a
branch of legislation as political economy the
few just notions that begin to be entertained
have been taught them not by any Lawyer Any one not to any London Lawyer
but by to a Scotch professor of moral philosophy
at Glasgow ? Why - but that the labyrinth of
law is still more intricate and dark and
dirty in England than in any other nation,
that the trial by Jury is one of the corners
of that labyrinth , and a corner peculiarly
formed in the way we have seen to soil the
characters of those who walk and work in it.
