§. The class out of which the members are thus taken
a class stationed in the middle rank of life.
If the class were station of the class were too low,
the quantum mass of intellectual endowment would be proportionally
insufficient to the purpose: as for example
if instead of the rank of mastermen, they were taken belonged
to the rank of Servants.
Every father of children, is in that quality a
Judge. But a father of children is as such a
Judge over none but children.
A master of Servants is in that quality a
Judge over servants: and among servants there will
be more adults than minors.
A father of children would on that score be
fitter for judicature than a batchelor: but a master
of servants could be still fitter than he who has had
none to act over whom to act as Judge over, but children.
A man will be fitter for judicature at large, the greater the
variety of human concerns that have come under his eye,
of the concerns that come under the eye of a master the
variety will in general be greater than of those that come
under the eye of his servant his journeyman in the same line.
The serv In every line of profit seeking occupation – husbandry, mining
fishing, handicrafts work, complicated manufacture, trade of exchange, buying
and selling – the master works most with his kind, the servant
works most with his hands.
