At length, when and how and by what means is unknown, the number
became not only dwindled but fixt: and twelve was the number
that thus became fixt, in all places and in all
causes.

How this twelve came to be the number, it is would be at once
vain and useless to inquire. To attach importance
to this or that number and without any reference to
use is among the well-known caprice of the
: a caprice in the formation production of which
has not infrequently had a tenor. There has been a
second number in some eyes: twelve in the same or others
so religion is has been averse to the recognizing a virtue mysteries in these
familiar abstractions: Report of Judaism has had had for its twelve patriarchs
Christianity its twelve Apostles, Paganism had its twelve
gods often upon them, and twelve others in the lower

But number 12 employed supposes a much
greater number burthened. Allowance must be made
for difficulties, and for individuals struck off by
an objection of incompetency called challenges.
