through mischief, Influence on morality. Propagation of immorality
Such are the immediate effects results of the future
of the institution: its influence in the folio of each the several
causes causes<add>suits</add> brought before the tribunal judiciatory who the decisions
of which are thus formed.
But the mischief does not end there: it extends
itself over the whole mental forms, intellectual or with
as much of the community nature by which which by
the fever of hubris, has and under the influence of a
carefully kept up, has bre accustomed itself not only merely
with indifference, but with applause self-complacency and self congratulation,
to see justice or what is called justice, administered
upon such principles and by such means.
The worst mischief may be thus described - the
the propagation of a general and habitual disposition to sacrifice
moral obligation to present personal convenience.
A disposition to join in pronouncing a judicial decision
which in the persuasion of him who joins in it is contrary
to truth and justice, is a disposition which it
is understood by every body, a Juryman must on
pain of torture to an indefinite extent, carry with him into
the Jury-box. But And as under the torture to which he is
exposed no degree of fortitude and perseverance would be able
to answer render his escape from this certain, the
most prudent and natural course is to join in the commission
of this at the first word.
