Lawyers contrived a rhetorical have a flourish, at the sound of which
non-lawyers are called upon to shut their eyes
against this injustice Judge or Advocate Service. Serving in this honourable
form is like the Lord's service "perfect freedom: it
capacity is the birthright, the peculiar glory of
an Englishman – the price or part of the price he
pays for English liberties: those unspeakable and matchless
blessings, for which no price can be too great high.
He who grumbles murmurs at the price is unworthy to enjoy
those liberties: unworthy to so much as to bear the name of Englishman.
Jurymen – If so, my Lord and Sir Lords and Gentlemen – let
not us Jurymen have monopolize to ourselves this privilege:
let us all, upon equal terms, act our respective
parts in the service of justice. Let it be Be it Your
Lordships glory, to judge without fee or salary: let Be it
it be your's, learned Sir, to plead without a fee.
Your residence is on the spot: we come from all distances
to the time actually applied to the service employed in the business of judicature, we have
to add, most of us, the expence, as well as the time, consumed
by journeys and demurrage.
