"But whatever continues says he almost immediately after
"to the form of the oath, the signification is the same.
It is the calling upon God to witness, i.e. to take notice
of what we say, and working his vengeance, or
renouncing his favour, if what we say be false, or
what we promise be not performed:" which definition
has appears to have been copied a quotation from some author
not mentioned, being honestly as noted as such by
inverted commas.

In every pulpit a sermon and accordingly in a book
of sermons under the title of principles of moral and
political philosophy the sin of the day is of course always
the greatest sin, as in a Catholic pulpit the saint
of the day is always the greatest saint. At this time, On this occasion and so
long as with this inflexible severity he was occupied
in applying the rod of ecclesiastical censure to the book books. in the lashing of perjurers, or the perjurer, he was preaching
ex cathedra, and at his ease.

A gift which by the Reverend Doctor does not appear
to have been added to his other gifts, any more than the gift of prophecy is the gift of prophecy.
What at that time he did not foresee, any more
than at any subsequent point of time remember, was that
that ver another time was about to happen, viz the time of the penning

of p. 267 of his succeeding volume when the committing, and by force of irresistible torture, the compelling, of this
outrageous sin, in which inter alia a contempt disbelief or
"contempt of God's knowledge power and justice", and "a
"defiance of the sanctions of religion" are "implied", was
to be of the number of those "imperfections", which "even if real, were
"are minute": nor that among the proofs and examples of that "general
"inadvertency to the obligation of oaths, which in a religious
"and political view is to much to be lamented", his own had so
"was about to make out present so good a title to a plan.
