Constitut. Code
Ch. 2
Expedients for effecting and securing the required junction
of interests
The causing the effecting of this junction the nature of the case affords
but in truth but one expedient an expedient
Expedient 1. Rendering it impracticable for the functionary
in question to pursue with effect any sinister interest
of which his own other than that which is in accordance
with the several universal interests
By interest in some shape or other the conduct of every individual
is on every occasion determined: precluded from by
whatsoever means from the advancement of the any sinister
interest, if to it there remains no cut off by which his
conduct can be determined other than that his one interest of his which is
in accordance with the universal interest. Thus is with
his share in the universal interest
Meantime this junction of interests how can it
be effected? The nature of the case admitts but of one means method
which is the destroying the influence and effect of whatever
sinister interest the situation of the individual may expose him to
the action of: this being accomplished he will thereby
be virtually divested of all such sinister interest: remains
as the only interest whereby his conduct can be determined,
his right and proper interest: that interest which consists
in the share he has in the universal interests, which is
the same thing as to say that interest which is in
accordance with the universal interest taken in the aggregate.
