Constitut. Code.
Thus So again when I say – In the breast of every ruler
actual see on the occasion of the arrangements taken by him
in the field of government the actual end or object of pursuit,
has in the instance of every such arrangement, has been his own
greatest happiness, and that in such sort as that whoever in
his judgment there has been a competition between his happiness
and that of all the other members of the community in question
taken together, has been on each occasion given to his own happiness the preference
over others, and and his endurance to give encrease to his own
happiness, to in whatsoever degree the aggregate of their happiness
may n his judgment be lessened by it, – in qu saying thus
what I have been doing I have been exhibiting the state of my own mind exhibited viewed
in another point of view: viewed as it were in another part of
it – my judgment the judicial family. I have given that
as my opinion: and an opinion of which I am prepared to bring to view
shew the efficientcauses.
Note (a)
While I am so doing I observe another law writer who by whom on
the score of my so doing taxes me with egotism, or to use another
word with dogmatism: meaning by definition something the done
which it is his wish his desire should not be done
In answer to this charge what I say is that either a
man must do thus, or he must forbear to wish at all: for
then it is not possible for men to wish without doing thus.
But of this defence on this occasion what I say against the charge of dogmatism one
is not confined to self defence against the charge of dogmatism:
it has for its object the warning giving against that mode of speech form of discourse
to in which the imputation of expressed by the word dogmatism does really and properly
attach.
