Junctiana Proposal
Whether the interests of the one nation of the two nations
or of the three nations more particularly in question, or
the interests of all nations upon earth be considered no
security for the aggregate advantage of all will it is believed
be found to be afforded by the nature of things, comparable
to that which is here proposed.
In the first place promise is made for the putting
of all other nations without exception upon an equal footing
in respect of and advantage of which, but for this plan
they could not any one of them entertain a hope. It is
therefore with eyes of gratitude, in so far as gratitude
may be capable of having place in minds so situated
it is with eyes of gratitude that the three States have a whose
cooperation is here proposed will be regarded: regarded
by the present generation and by all future ones.
Amity therefore not hostility is the sort of sentiment for
some time at least could scarcely but be looked for
at the hands of every one of them unless for a time,
Spain alone the as yet the country matchless as yet for the disastrous mixture of obstinacy and
impatience should be to be excepted.
At Should however at any future time ill
humour or interest ill understood produces on the part
of any European or other State a disposition to
disturb the universally beneficial arrangement, the
combined defence force of the two immediately contiguous States joins to the protecting
naval force of the Anglo-American States would present to the
eye of any such secret adversary a wall of brass
against the defensive force of which no attacks that could be made from any
other quarter could afford so much as the smallest promise
of success.
