Constitutional Code – Philosoph. Logical Arrangement
Objects of General desire – Sweets of power rule, government.
Instruments of Corruption.
In the case of the love of power there is not less selfishness
than in is not less intense than in that of the love of money. But it is less prominent. It
is more readily generally allowed to cover itself with the pretence of benevolence
– the love of doing good. With the power of doing good, the correspondent power – the
good, it is undeniable, can not be done: and whose he who with the ends
can act but with the necessary means: and thus it is that
while avarice, having no cloak or mask, is overwhelmed with reproach
despotism by the severs itself from reproach covers itself by a profession and show of
benevolence.
