1822 Oct. 25
Constitut. Code

Yet in some countries Monarchies – England for example – scarce an individual
to whom whom it is not matter of habit to speak
speak occasionally of the Monarch, and hear him spoken
of, and with some adjunct of general approbation or disapprobation such as good and bad attached to his
official or personal denomination name.

But for a comparatively rare occurrence or habitual
state of things a particular occurrence this epithet will be
of the approbation kind: the cause reason has been already mentioned.
Note then the consequence. So it be but through the ordinary
courses – namely war and selfish indulgence in
the shape of what is called magnificence – there is no
quantity of evil mischief so great in the shape of waste and depredation as it be in the shape of taxes and murder
so it be upon a national scale that a man in that situation
may not be the author of, and still remaining the object
of general love and admiration.

Maintain what skill has any of those who seeing
before them and above them a man whose conduct is
stained with those atrocities, have gives to them the sanction
of approbation by thus making the word good or what
is equivalent to the name official or personal, of the
matter of evil on the largest scale? Whatever he may be
in intention or fact and in effect he is an accessory
to all the atrocities by which this object of his
eulogy has made been making an uncontrovertible title to universal
abhorrence. If, in the cause of a kindness
for the gratification of the Monarchs rapacity or antipathy thirst of
vengeance a war in a word without necessity a matter of
hence being men have been consigned an untimely death, here are a
matter of murders
committed – and to
who their pure full
benediction or the hand
of the author is accessory
before or after the fact – is
instigator of of the murder of those who know instigators to all those murders.
