1823. April 29
Constitut. Code

The manner in which the instruments of discourse are applied
to the purpose of generating de the thisdelusion generation of delusion for this purpose in this form
admitts and requires yet another distinction. It is applied either
in such measure as with the intent that in such manner
that the erroneousness of the conception meant to be conveyed
by it is understood to be concealed, or else in a manner
in which that erroneousness is actually avowed. To this
last case belongs the instrument of delusion called fiction. An
assertion is advanced which the by the very person by whom it
is advanced is at the same time acknowledged to be false:
at that same time consequences are deduced from it, and
acts exercises of power deduced grounded on it as if it were true.
In this one mode of delusion the maximum of depredation
is exemplified by the two parties in the two correspondent
shapes of moral, on the part of him by whom the whose effrontery
instrument of oppression is employed: the maximum of
intellectual depravity by him by whom without indignation
the use made of it is viewed. A government which
allows to a Judge the use of fiction as in the character of a justification
of his act, allows gives him an honour for the commission
of any crime, and or money of time at his pleasure077154 on condition of a prefacing it by a palpable and acknowledged
lie: the force of depravity can go no further
in this one exemplification the powers force of human depravity
are exhausted. Yet But what is the depravity abomination to which
since have not been reconciled by use? So perfectly are
those in this instance, that those in whose instance it is
every days practice, are all the while indefatigable in
the spreading of their use and one anothers praises.
