Constitut. Code
In the labouring – the productive class – life in its the general tenor
is a life of beneficence: of maleficence whatever has place
forms the exceptions: and in comparison with the beneficence
those exceptions extremely rare. By the produce of his labour
though in a narrow and always limited proportion
he contributes procures to his own subsistence and contributes in that of
the family to which he belongs: in so doing he contributes
at the same time to his own felicity gratification enjoyment: for by the constitution
of human nature, gratification is inseparably attached to
those operations by which the individual and those by which
the species is preserved. At the same time to an indefinite
amount according to the nature of his employment he contributes to the gratification of others in
abundance: others by whom no such contribution is made
to the general stock of felicity are made. By him no mischief
in any shape is done: no depredation committed
no oppression in any other shape committed.
Well then this uniformly beneficial class does any
part of that ad person and admiration fall to their share?
No: not the smallest particle: so far from being objects
or respect or sympathy, they are covered objects of contempt and
sym antipathy: the more profusely so, the better they serve as foils to the receptacles of
all excellence.
A circumstance from which all this symptom of injustice
receiving more assistance than can easily without considerable attention be conceived
is the use of double and abuse associated with the word purity
and some others of that stamp: the confusion in which they
have the two ideas so compleatly different from each other
have thereby been involved.
