1824. April 27
Constitutional Code

2. Evil 2. Production of positive evil, indefinite in amount,
in quantity al quality indefinitely various; in quantity altogether
boundless.

Proof. The individ patron the long fountain of this honour
has like every other individual a sinis particular and sinister interest an interest and thence desires
contrary opposite to the universal interest. To these desires all persons desirous
of obtaining the honor at his disposal will of course apply
their endeavours to the supplying the gratification sought for:
and such that will those endeavours how great so ever to
the detriment thereof thereby produced to the person accidental interest.

3. Evil 3 or 1. Lessening the force of the inducement by
which was this factitious honor out of the way case men would be led
by the prospect of natural honor to engage in the employ their endeavours in
the performance of service to the public.

Proof. Set Setting aside But for the intervention of the factitious honor to the service to the
public would be directed all endeavours. Add then the factitious
honor, and while some or continue occupied in the endeavour
to render service to the public, the endeavours of others will be turned aside
to the rendering of service to the patron by the fountain of ,
by whom it alone it can be conferred. In this circumstance If it were
ever known that the in as many as half the number of instances
in which it were conferred the factitious honor would be conferred
on account of public service, in the other half it being conferred
on account of private service, those by whom public service
had been performed would thus be confounded with an equal
number of those by whom no such service had been performed:
whereas but for the factitious honor whatsoever reward was to be
had in this shape would be known to stand appropr attended
exclusively to the performance of public service.

But only for argument sake can such equality of division be supposed: realised
it can not be. The factitious honor the Of by far the greatest number
of the capable men in question the attention will be drawn off
altogether from service to the public to service to the individual patron.
For by the supposition, at his disposal are all the instruments of notification
– the titles of honor and the symbols of dignity. Of the Having nothing
to make it known and extract from the members of members of the community the such tribute as they
would otherwise pay in the
shape of regard and respect
the extraordinary service
is to this purpose for the
most part as if it had not
been rendered.
