Constitutional Code
Evil 4. Delusion. Error into which the public mind is General delusion which is as much Evil 4. Erroneous opinion thus infused into the public mind.
say a general weakness in the frame of the public mind: To
encourage engage men by the prospect of reward in the shape to render
service to his own particular and sinister interest, he deludes
that some by the intimation that the universal interest to the
exclusion or in preference to his own is the on all occasions the
object of his regard and endeavour: others by the notion that
between his own particular interest and the universal interest
there is no distinction, wherever the opposition is little less
than constant and compleat.
Evil 5. Among the fruits of this illusion, injustice
to the prejudice of the members of the community at large: namely
by means of the tribute of regard and respect extracted from
them without an equivalent: without that equivalent which
would be have been rendered by the performance of real and extraordinary
service to and for the benefit of the community at large.
Evil 6. Injury to those the by whom the real and extraordinary
service in some shape or other is rendered notwithstanding
rendered to the to the members of
the community taken in the aggregate: of the honour regard and respect the whole
of which would otherwise have been theirs the greater part is thus
to their prejudice conferred on those by whom no such public
service has been rendered. True it is that the more compleatly
the desire and endeavour to render service to the public is extinguished
the less will be the aggregate amount of the evil in this shape.
