4. Evil 4. Upon To an indefinite extent Substitution of a general system of corrupt obsequiousness to the
beneficence efficient benevolence upon a public private as well as public scale,
obsequiousness to the will of the patron, and to the wills of
those his known and declared favorites. By gratification
afforded to his desires, the boon would be obtainable in an immediate
way, without the intervention of any other will: by gratification
afforded to the desire of those his known favorites the same boon
would likewise be obtainable, though not with equal dispatch or to equal
certainty, or with equal promptitude. Without his good will favour
immediately or unimmediately as above obtained it would never could not ever
be obtainable: with by means of the help of that same good will it would
be obtainable by every individual, the most worthless and mischievous
not excepted: obtainable without any the smallest expence
in the shape of effective benevolence, a continual on the
narrowed individual scale.
