Constitutional Code

The cause of this weakness is this as follows: The receptors
imbibing of the false conception and the producing production of the correspondent
effect upon the will is the effec work of the
imagination: the detection of the falsity and followed by
the correspondent opposite effect upon the will by which the right
direction is given to it is the work of the judgment: the
work of the imagination is begun and compleated in the
same instant: to compleat the corrective operation in the few comparatively few instances in which it is performed the work of the judgment (at whatever instant
begun) may be the work of hours, days, weeks, months or
years.

The case truth is that though in the instance of each individual
occurrence the effect produced upon the mind is thus
instantaneous, the disposition on the part of the mind to exhibit
this instantaneous effect is the work of years – begun
in earliest childhood at the very dawn of reason: it is the product
of association: of an habitual association between the ideas
of the of class of objects in question – to wit the dignified class
of men composed of persons thus dignified distinguished and the idea
of the qualities some truly some erroneously supposed to regarded as
be belonging to them. If then the error is corrected, to effect the
correction of it has required been the work the producing a deputation
of the bond formed by this same habitual and interrupted course of association.
