§.3. Number in an office.

Instructional or Note. ()

Art. If the principle in support of which
the abovementioned ratiocinative matter is adduced, is correct
– it will serve as a standard of rectitude, by comparison
with which, indication will be given of aptitude or
inaptitude, – and in case of inaptitude, of the degree of inaptitude,
in the Official Establishments of the several civilized
States, in so far as their official Establishment
is known. A collection, composed of accounts of the
different forms of Government having place in the several
civilized States, in 6 Volumes commencing with tye year 1821,
is extant in the French language: a useful supplement
to it would be a comparative statement of the denominations
of the several official situations, with the number of
seats in each many-seated situation. It may might be brought
within compass by the omission of names and other adjuncts
applying exclusively to individuals.

Documents, more or less plainly authenticated,
have been annually published in various countries.
Examples are –
1. England.
2. France.
3. Spain.
4. Papal State.
5. Central Government of the Anglo American United States.

Instructional or Note.

Art. Additional instruction would be afforded
by reference made, in each situation, in so far as
practicable, to the several places occupied in the whole
of the logical field of service, as indicated by the denominations
herein employed.

Art. As far as obtainable, two heads of information
would be necessary to compleat the usefulness of
the body of information here indicated.

1. A full account of the quantum of emolument in all
shapes attached to the several situations: distinguishing
from each other that part which is fixt, as in case of salary,
and that which is variable, as in case of fees.

2. A concise statistical account of the population and the
revenue in the case of each such State: with reference made
to it's several Geographical local divisions & distant dependancies: and in each instance indication afforded of the comparison effectual values of money the same quantities of gold or silver in respect of power of purchase in the several States un
