1825. Decr. 13
Constitutional CodeCh. XXII Appellate Judges
§. 4. Grounds of decision
(2)
Never was injustice were depredation and oppression more barefaced and pretenceless.
Is it to save time? No, for of those and
false friends the suitor may have any number that
he pleases to speak at the same time.
As to its remaining thus long without remedy
the wonder would not be great were it possible that the
injustice should be still more flagrant. In relation to
any abuse in the practice of the law never does a
non lawyer dare to make a motion in parliament,
he would be overwhelmed with scorn by the lawyer tribe
on the ground of imputed ignorance. As to a lawyer
standing up to oppose the sinister interest of his own tribe
human nature may be trusted for security against any
such treachery: if illustration were necessary it a recent one ought
be found in the conduct of that tribe on the occasion
of Lord Althorps County Courts Bill in the Sessions
of 1824 and 1825.
In a case in which the Government, that is to
say the Monarch and the Aristocracy have a particular
sinister interest, oppression joins with depredation in
the demand of this sacrifice: by to the Judge, Chief Justice of the Kings Bench a functionary who has at all
times been one of the main supports of that sinister interest
by him shared to his share falls in the more immediate way
the benefit of the oppression: to him but only in conjunction
with the professional tribe, the benefit of the depredation.
