Instructions.

3. Law Advisers. In his character of Law Adviser the lawyer
advises what shall be done and said: the Law Agent does it the
Law argumentator says it.

Under Rome-bred Law, the Law Adviser is stiled Jurisconsult.

Under English-bred law he is termed a Counsel: the name
of the a fictitious entity having thus been converted into the a
name for the too real one: as aptly he might have been
termed an Adviser. By the lower order, and by those alone
the only apt term Counsellor is now employed.

Counsel – a Counsel – the Counsel is also predicated
employed in speaking of the Lawyer when it is only in the
character of representative and that alone that he is occupied.

In Bonapartes Codes the two faces that of the Attorney
and that of the Advocate are hidden under one hand.
On the occasion of a suit one sort of lawyer alone is
ever mentioned and he is called an Avoué: the Latin
Advocatus gallicized. Procureans (Procurations) and
Avocats (Advocate) suitors find to their cost have not a less separate existence
than being thus lumped together under that one Appellative.
This mystery is not without its use: use that is to say
to the manufactories – to anybody rather than the suitor.
