§. 1. Class but one.

Like causes produce like effects. In the early ages of the
English Monarchy the journeys of the Monarch were of
a par with the invasion of a army: functionaries
employed by him for the purpose, took from every body person as
they went whatsoever it was agreable for them to take,
the takers paying them any price for it: their official denomination
was purveyors: to on that denomination the odium which
may be imagined had fastened itself, by an act of parliament
made for the purpose their denomination was endeavoured to be pulled off
and the denomination purveyors in old french a in modern
french acheteurs, endeavoured to be stuck on in its
stead. But on the part of the English King this attempt
to procure acceptance for a new word was not more
successful than in the often referred to case was that of the Roman
Emperors: the term Purveyor with the odium continued
loaded with with whatsoever odium the state of the law kept attached to it,
till at the restoration of the commencement of which and to be called
the grand Rebellion is at the resurrection of Monarchy the power
belonging to it was abolished: in some cases, it still continues
to be employed, and because the odium along with with the power
the odium has evaporated from it.
