1825. Decr 7
Constitutional CodeCh. XXIV Professional Lawyers
§. 1. Class one only.
Instructions.
Of the profession of professional lawyer nothing can be
more natural nothing the usefulness is beyond dispute: without
it all those who were by whatever cause were disabled
from acting by themselves and at the same time from procuring
the gratuitous assistance of others, would be in the
same state of outlawry and helplessness – as all who
with the benefit of it all are still are who are not able
by relative indigence are disabled from purchasing its expensive costly
assistance.
Not so that division of labour by which the service
of the Advocate speaking lawyer is severed from that of the managing lawyer
and the rendering of the two branches of that service by one and
the same person interdicted. Compleatly adverse to is this
separation to every one of the ends of justice. 1. To non-decision
it contributes and in one eminent degree by addition to be by the expence
to that evil of which is composed which constitutes one of the three branches of
the evil correspondent and opposite to the collateral ends of
justice.
