As if for the evaporation of the sum of responsibility, Judges having
been crowded upon another on the same bench, some one of them
under some such name as that of the Judge of instruction has been detached from the rest to undergo the drudgery of receiving and extracting the evidence: while the others reserve to
themselves the more agreeable task of determining the fate of the
suit and of the parties to it, taking upon the evidence
