Ch. I all-embracing arrangements Statements
(3 §.2. Enumeration and explanation
(Note) (a) the word real
labouring under two
disadvantages 1. Obscurity
and to a person
unconversant with the
Latin language 2. Ambiguity
from the 2
senses attributed to it 1.
appertaining to things as
above 2. true & genuine
in contradistinction to
false & spurious. In
both senses will occasion
require it to be employed
throughout this work.
Note (a) ?
Behold here a the disadvantages under which the
attribution real on this as on other occasions, labours: these are
1. obscurity and 2 ambiguity. To a person unconversant with the
Latin language it does not convey an idea so luminary
as to a person conversant with that language. The idea
meant to be conveyed by it is that which stands expressed by the
words appertaining to a thing: and this is the idea which accordingly
it does convey to the mind of a person conversant in that
language: res being in Latin the word that corresponds to thing in
English. Thingish if the word were in use is endurable to
an English ear as the word which instead of the word real would have been employed.
But thingish would not be endurable to an English ear,
any more than choisial to a French ear choisial.
Thence it is that as need for the requisite conjugate of thing
and chose French as well as English are reduced to borrow import
from the Latin, the word real.
Then as to ambiguity. A widely different import idea
for the designation of which this same attribution real is employed
is that of true and genuine in contradistinction and opposition
to sp false and spurious.
As Of this word in both these its significations the need
of making use would be continually having place throughout its
work, hence the use of giving intimation first, once for all
as in this the first occasion of the occasion by which of its being employed.
