Sitting of the 13 April 1821

Secretary Freire read a letter presented by Mr Deputy
Sepulveda, to whom it had been addressed by Mr
Carvalho, member of the Regency of the Kingdom, together
with the works of Jeremiasy Bentham, offered presented by its their venerable
author to the Portuguese nation, in which letter it was
said, that he could not give a stronger testimony
of the value he put upon estimation in which he held the generous and
flattering present, that in accompanying combining with its the
presentation of it to the Cortez the wish that the
Cortes may in practice adhere to the liberal doctrines
of the most distinguished first and eldest constitutionalist
in Europe

Penetrated with the sentiments of esteem
due to the illustrious Bentham, to that Sage whose
wisdom has illuminated the Universe & to whom
the free nations ought to erect a monument of
gratitude for the indefatigable zeal he has displayed exercised developed in favor of
in the just cause of liberty [the Cortez Congress has deli] resolved
not to confine itself to the only to make that honourable mention on should be made in
its minutes of the present, but that it will moreover to change
the Regency to have the whole of these works translated and
printed, and that one of the Secretaries of this August
Congress shall write to him to express the thanks of the call to his secretaries the gratitude of the Cortes
& stating that (his present was by one & presented by another
Cortes a sua lembrança to each of those persons
who projected and led to the development
& particularly for having contributed to the development
of those glorious of those causes glorious incidents events which have led to our glorious
political regeneration, and further that to the
said Bentham he should transmit an authenticated copy of the act
in which this resolution of the Sovereign Congress is expressed
