For Del Barrio to Secry Canning First draught not employed
'Del Barrio — a Guatemalian functionary, to Mr
Secretary Canning. on the recognition of Guatemalia, and the
proposed junction of the Atlantic and the Pacific
Sir
I by leave The purpose of this address is to solicit the honour of an interview
with you, and that a speedy one under on the
following circumstances subjects.
1. Recognition of the Commonwealth of Guatemalia
by England.
2. Junction of the Atlantic and Pacific through
the Lake Nicaragua in Guatemala.
1. Recognition. In regard to the Commonwealth of
Guatemalia the notions generally entertained in Europe
have as yet been materially erroneous. It has
been considered as a sort of portion of a dependency of Mexico.
The fact is — till now of late constituted a Commonwealth,
it was independent of every other province
in Spanish America, and bore the name of
Kingdom of Guatemalia.
Its population is upwards of two Million:
2,000,000 greater than that of any one other of the lately Spanish
provinces except Mexico.
to Guatemalia is so circumstanced as to have
had very little commendation with the rest of the world;
except with England, chiefly that is to directly though the
port of Omoa; but still more to a much greater amount indirectly through Jamaica.
The English Log wood cutting settlement at the Bay of Honduras
call it [ .. ] a name scarcely known in England.
a settlement maintained under Spencer and by
more a sort of sufferance and as it seems by under a limited acknowledgment, is situated in the territory that belongs without
dispute to Guatemalia.
