Down to the present time several circumstances an explanation of which would be too long for the present address,, have concurred
in placing keeping Guatemala as it were in the shade, and
keeping alive conceptions altogether opposite to the truth. It has
been regarded as a sort of dependaency on Mexico: from
first to last it has been a separate dominion with by the
title of name of the Kingdom of Guatemalia: In population
it yields it is true to Mexico: but it is superior
to every other of the late General dependences: it is not less so little
than as two millions. It The kingdom has two capitals of the same name
as itself: the old and the new. New Guatemala has not less
than 45,000 inhabitants. It has In the Atlantic the Territory it
has two principal ports, Truxillo and Omoa: they are
seldom either of them without four, five or six English
Ships: some from England direct; but most from Jamaica
Not less than 200 arrive and sail leave in the course of
the year: In the year 18 more I am inclined to think
than in any other of the late Spanish dependencies dependent
and now independent & quondam Spanish States
Ao 1818 being for a short time at Truxillo I see there

leagues from New Guatemala, and Riealejo in Nicaragua
communicating with no great distance from the Lake of that name.

very little less than

of the Isthmus
by which North and
South America are
joined:

The English Logwood-cutting settlement of in the
bay of Honduras —a settlement maintained, in Spain during
and during during the Spanish dominion and since the dissolution
of it under a limited acknowledgment and as
it were by sufferance is in a territory that belong has
always belonged without dispute to Guatemala.

In comparison of the English
the number of vessels there

nations put together is
very inconsiderable

Without reckoning militia Guatemala has now
on foot 20,000 regular troops. In respect of the military Expenses, line it may
vie with any state in Europe. For in respect of general instruction? it has at all times been

times been in a very
superior state in comparison
of every other Spanish dependency:
on the subject of religion
its university
much more liberal:
(in exceeding that of Mexico. Gunpowder it manufactures, artillery it casts, in abundance.
