J.B. to Boyer President of Haiti

+ The proposal which I have the hon to beg your acceptance
of you will find printed in two languages — the
original English and a Spanish translation. I a Some
copies of a French translation will I hope follow by the next
opportunity. But No one in that language being as yet to my knowledge
made, I would not thought it best not to suffer the present
opportunity to be wholly lost.
+ Sent this paragraph perhaps
in the English original
but omitted out of
the French translation sent
on Feby 1823 as
a duplicate.
The French language, as you will see, but too plainly
is not so perfectly in my possession at my command as I could
wish it were: still, but having it in my power to be in some sort my
own interpreter, I thought it best not to trust altogether
to another any other person my chance for presenting on
myself to you in my proper colours
this occasion to your notice, in a form as near to the original as I could might
make it, the picture of my mind. It is a mind filled
with the truest respect for whatever it has heard of your character
as witness the hand that belongs to it
Jeremy Bentham
To Jean Pierre Boyer
President of the Republic
of Haiti
It is with singular satisfaction I
hear accounts so eminently favourable
of your Charge d'Affairs Agent at Paris
Pity but that such an one as he were
here at London. Why not he himself,
some time there, some time here.
One and the same Agent, uniting in his
own person the stock of information obtainable
at both places would he not be even preferable
to two such Agents even supposing
the same high ability in both of them?
