of utility to mankind. Mr. Bowring, who is so justly sensible
of the honor done to him by your correspondence, knows that
this the satisfaction desire of rendering my labour useful in all ways in my power to Haiti is of the number of those points, in relation to which, his the
assurance of his assistance is most gratifying to me. The only documents I have as yet before
me are a — 1. - a Letter of yours to him, a Letter of yours to M. Jullien,
Fondateur et Directeur de la Revue Encyclopedique, and the Address from the
Chamber of Representatives of the Commons, to the citizens of the
Commonwealth, as printed in the Paris paper - the Constitutionel.
To the particulars of the Constitution of your State, I am, to my no
small regret, still a stranger. In relation to these particulars, you
may perhaps be not altogether disinclined to gratify my wishes,
when they are thus made known to you, together with the motives
by which they have been produced, and the grounds I have for
the hope, that, in relation to your service, my labours in the great line in question, may
not be altogether useless.

When from time to time I make observation, of
the horrible extent, to which the trade in slaves with Africa is
still carried on, notwithstanding all the exertions, which, for
so long a course of years, have been directed to the suppression
of it, - my imagination is, every now and then, painting to
me, a means of retribution, which, whether upon the whole
it would or would not be beneficial to mankind; I could not, I must confess, in the hope
of its proving so, see realized without sensible satisfaction: vessels
(I mean) fitted out from your state, capturing the slave-trading ships,
aggregating the victims of theat barbarous traffic so the numbers of your citizens,
