C
Of Unlawful Defamation Calumniation

[(D) Reputation] 1. It matters not in what way the Notion
in question is prejudicial to the reputation of the party; nor
whether by tending to expose him to the aversion+ + or displeasure or ill-will of those among
whom the notion is propagated or to their contempt or disesteem or loss of their good-will:
or by bereaving him of any extraordinary share he might
otherwise have possessed of their love or esteem.

2. A man may incur the aversion or contempt of his fellow
creatures either, 1. in a direct way By being believed to merit their displeasure
or contempt or, 2. in an indirect way By being believed to have actually
incurred it: and that, whether deservedly or undeservedly.

Reasons.

1. Because on this occasion as well as all others
men are disposed to imitate one another without reflection.

2. Because the fact of any one person's disliking
You or despising You carries with it some kind of presumption
of your having done something for which any
other person would regard You in the same manner.

3. A man may be believed to merit aversion and
contempt either on the score of some particular Acts or practices
