Of Unlawful Defamation.
prejudicial to the community,⊞ ⊞ producing a real ballance of evil, to wit on the shape of pain produced, or pleasure prevented from coming into existence. This they may be either 1 by
being prejudicial to others, or 2. By being prejudicial to
the party himself. But the prejudices of mankind in various
countries and conditions of life have added various
acts and practices to the list of disreputable ones
which do not deserve to be so.
8. Acts that are simply disreputable without being
prohibited by Law are for the most part spoken of
as being indicative of the existence of with reference to some disreputable
quality in the party in question: as if indicative of the
existence of such quality in the person in question. For instance
an act of ingratitude, or act of cowardice tyranny.
9. Of disreputable qualities some are possessible by
and disreputable in persons of all Countries and descriptions:
the rest are possessible by or disreputable
in persons of particular descriptions only.
10. Disreputable qualities are in either case qualities
either of the body or of the mind: and qualities of the
mind are either moral; to wit qualities of the Will; or intellectual; to wit qualities of the understanding intellectual faculty.
