The above divisions run unavoidably one into
another. So intimate is the connection, on the one hand between
the useful and the agreeable; on the other hand
between the interests of the party who happens to be
in question, and those of others. Reasons might not
be wanting for ranking one and the same quality under
all these titles.
13. The evils to which a man is exposed by any
thing done to the prejudice of his reputation are
of two sorts. 1. The particular actual loss of character: by which is meant the Sum of the external inconveniences that
may attend the loss he thereby incurs of the good-will
of his fellow-creatures. 2. The pain of humiliation,
which a man is apt to feel at the general prospect of
such inconveniences, whether any such inconveniences
do or do not ever actually befal him.
