Meantime so useful is this extended sympathy is its tendency so beneficial
with reference to all interests without exception, that whence
so ever it is seen or supposed to have place, it becomes
the object of universal praise: it conferrs on
a man that good reputation in which every man beholds
so valuable a possession, the possession of which every man heart entertains
accordingly so strong a desire. Every man therefore who beholds
before his eyes any chance of success is naturally
disposed on every occasion to do his utmost towards the spreading and strengthening the belief
of the intensity with firmness of the held which this generous motive
has in his breast, and of the force and efficiency
with which it is therein want to operate.

Now to him in whose breast it exists is the
least quantity this essence of his being under the dominion of it possessing it does is not
less useful than to him in whose breast it exists in
the largest quantity.

But the larger the quantity in which it really
exists the larger the quantity in which independently
of its exertions made for the purpose of and causing its
existence to be believed, it will manifest itself become manifest, and
thereby cause its existence to be believed: and conversely
the smaller the quantity in which it exists, the smaller the quantity in independently
of all such exertions, its existence will be
believed. The desire therefore being equal, the smaller
the quantity in which it really exists has place, the greater will be
the exertions made to produce the belief of its having place.
