U.S. the only instance in which it was tried.

Perplexing Lamentable indeed was the case of mankind while
this supposition a supposition so readily advanced and so
readily received remained unconfuted by notorious fact:
fortunate in this respect the condition of mankind at that at
the supposition has been that confuted. America –
the American United States.

In the no one part of the confederacy of the American
United States is has political defamation ever been treated on the
footing of an offence. For private defamation of an individual
in his individual capacy ad by action, yes: for defamation
of the whole constituted authorities collectively or individually
not one single instance: not one in all those
forty years during which the confederacy has continued in
a state of independence.(a)

as above this never acted upon.

In no one particular that can be named during
all this interval has the busi in any other country that
can be named has the business of government been stood conducted
on any such footing as can for a moment stand
in comparison with that on which it has been conducted
in the U.S. United States. ☞ Particularize the main points of
good and bad government.

In this one instance and no other then has the compleat absence of all
upon political defamation been ever exemplified. In this
one instance alone has the experiment been compleatly tried:– behold the result if it.
