Extract from the Examiner 31st December 1828

York (Upper Canada), Octr. 27. – Mr. Henry Crampton, formerly
Editor of the Montreal Examiner, was tried last Saturday, for
damning the King! – The trial was one continual farce. The
defendant conducted his own defence, and greater added thereby
to the abundant mirth of the spectators. The unfortunately Jurors
remained confined in the Jury room, in this case, from Saturday
afternoon until Tuesday, at 1 p.m. where they stood ten to two.
The Judge recommended discharging the pannel. Mr Crompton
acceded, and a new trial was ordered. American Paper

In the year 1673, Charles le Petit, a printer, was burned
alive at the Place de Grèves for printing a volume of impious
and indecent sougo. About a Century afterwards, in England
Lords Halifax and Egremont were condemned in 4,000£
damages, with the costs, for seizing the impression of John
Wilkes's "Essay on Woman". – London Weekly Review
