1825. Jany. 6.
Penal Code
Effects of riot or say tumult, produced by false alarm of fire
in a theatre, raised for the purpose of depredation.
Morn. Chron. Jany. 6, 1825.
[From the Courier Francais of Monday]
Paris – Jany. 3d. There was some disorder yesterday at
the Theatre Les Varietiés, owing to some pickpockets making
an alarm of fire. They thought the terror of the people
would favor their plans, and were not deceived.
In an instant, there was a tumult in every part of the
House. The spectators made the best of their way
from the boxes, and some ladies were trampled under
foot, and the pickpockets profited by this to steal a
great number of shawls, pelisses, jewels &c. It was
not till after the tumult had lasted a long time
that it was discovered the alarm was false. The armed
force arrived on the spot, forbade any body to enter
the salon, and the play could not be renewed after
the disturbance. We hope the police will discover
it's authors.
