1826. May 24.
Penal Code

In the case here in question, to the words corporal
vexation is added the words simple. In and by
this adjunct is implied that besides this, other
modes of corporal vexation are in contemplation,
as presenting a demand for distinction, denomination,
definition, and punishments under so many
separate heads.

The truth is that in no shape, according to the
greatest happiness people principle can wrong be
committed, at least to the detriment of an individual,
but vexation in this shape must be among
the results of it. But, in particular cases,
in respect of the shape assumed by the suffering produced
by it, the wrong will be seen presenting itself
in so many different shapes: and this in such sort as to
require so many different denominations to the
attached expository matter to form a ground for
the compensation punishment, and other remedies
which will be seen requiring to be employed.
