Ch. Defamation

Art. Still more mischievously important because more extensive
in its consequence because more extensive is the expence
given of late years to the secure from against it
censorship of the Public Opinion Tribunal the reputation of
the client, a Journalist – a Newspaper Editor prosecuted
and punished as a criminal under the appellation of a libeller
for a paragraph of in condemnatory character tone having
for its subject matter the character and conduct of the

punishment, hurt to the feelings of the existing Monarch and
his family. A consistent application of the
principle thus established would of itself suffice to
render all history worse than useless: a source
and that a sure one of the most mischievous delusion: a
delusion which would of itself suffice to establish and give establishment and
perpetuity to perpetuate the most tyrannical despotism: and by which
in this or any and every other country had it been established at an early period of the its history
of this or any other country could not have failed to be
productive of that effect. For, if by indication of deficiencies
in appropriate aptitude in any shape in any instance
this effect of hurt to feelings would be produced, so ought might
it in any other: the consequence is that if the repressive principle
had its intended effect every Monarch would be represented
as a be> in the character of a God upon earth: a being to whose
will, by the people for their own sake no resistance ought should
on any occasion be
opposed: and to whom
it could be maker not
only of a right but of
duty to give effect, at
their expence to every
desire has
so ever it were that
should at any time
spring up in his breast.
