It has arisen from the
state of society in early
ages

pre-eminence over justice. The record of
this state of society is to be found in the texture
of language. Virtus, from whence, in English &
other modern languages, the word virtue is
a conjugate of vis, the Latin for force. Force alone
had at that time received the name of virtue.
So in the Greek Αρηίη, which by degrees came
to signify that which with us is designated
by the word virtue was a conjugate derived
from Αρεης, the god of war, by the Latins
called Mars. In Italian cativo is in signification
or nearly so with at of the English word
bad. It is an adjunct expressive of general and
unliquidated disapprobation, and is applied
not to persons only but also to things. The
case is that in its original significations, it
sygnified & signifies, neither more nor less than
captive. But now why then it may be asked, did
