Law Amendment or Penal Code
Not that the disappointment principle has ever
or could ever have, remained wholly unemployed. On
the contrary wheresoever as applied to matters of
property the word justice or natural justice have been
employed, this has been the principle, in howsoever
obscure a medium looked to contemplated and brought to view.
But, for want of a name to tie it to, to give as it
were a body to it, no regular application could be
made of it, the sun being thence habitually under
a cloud, with only him and a share breaking through it only now and then by a
short flash, the each succeeding traveller found greater
facility in laying hold of the of some preceding
traveller with his eyes closed than in keeping them open and making
use of them for his own guidance.
Of this principle considered in the character of a
guide to conduct, it will be evident that it is that for
the employment of which the least quantity of intellectual
light in the mind is necessary. It is among the accompaniments or results
of what is called instinct: by which is meant that faculty
which the human possesses in common with other
animals, and in more particularly those classes called gregarious:
under the guidance of this faculty, man follows
man as sheep sheep, and goose goose.
But, being thus suited to the use of the weakest
this guide is suited to the use of all, and is accordingly
the only one that could have been suited to the use of all.
