Penal Code.
Ch. Instruments of Delinquency
§. 3
Sinister influence
Unoperating corruptors
advantage over operating
& may derive the whole of
the profits & bear
none of the opprobrium

Prodigious is the advantage which in this case the unoperating
corruptor has over every operating one: From
the vicious act, he may derive the whole of the profit
in every shape derivable from it, and frequently
without sharing any part in the opprobrium, not only
is he exempted from taking any share in the criminal
act and its effect but while reaping the full benefit
of it, he remains at full liberty, not only to disavow,
but to speak in terms of reprobation of the act of every
visible agent belonging to it. Awake or asleep he immediately
reaps the benefit of it.
