Offences against Condition
Of the power of punishment, and consequently of the eventual exercise of it in the hands of a Master
the necessity is more particularly most evident in the case
where the Servant is under age: more particularly in the
case of an Apprentice.
In the case of Religion, if, for the purpose of causing
the Servant to embrace any religious persuasion, the Master
employs the power of punishment, it is an abuse of Mastership.
But so as punishment be not employed, if by influence
in any other shape whether it be influence of understanding in understanding, or the Master produces or endeavours
to produce the like effect, this of itself is not abuse.
The Master is free here to apply influence, the Servant
is free to withstand it.
