Penal or Civil Code Ch. X. Offences affectg Trust
Trust created by Domestic Condition
In flow objections argu naturally urged as peremptory
one frequent inaptitude of the Widowed Mother
for so important a trust.
Answer: Even in the first instance and during
the marriage inaptitude on the female side far from
being more probable is not so improbable as on the male
side. On the In respect of the moral branch the superiority
of the is clearly in large proportion on the side of
the female: there is the natural instinct in the case of the
biped feathership race, as in the case of biped feathered
race and the quadruped race: there is moreover the habit
of as in the quadruped race, and that habit
continued during a much greater length of time.
In respect of intellectual aptitude no decided
difference none.
In respect of appropriate apt active aptitude,
true it is may be that the degree of this branch of aptitude is greater
generally speaking on the part of the male than on the part of the female. But so far
as it is in the quality of mistress that power over her children
and thence over the produce of the labour of those same children
is demanded for the widowed mother, her own means of providing
for the childs subsistence as well as her and her own together being less than
would be have been that of her husband the childs father had he survived
her, the demand for of a supply from that source as from
every other is so much the greater.
But taking her in her quality of Guardian the of
whichever benefit might be reaped by the child from the active
branch of her aggregate appropriate aptitude the quantity
depends altogether upon the moral branch: and in the case on the part
of the female, this, it has been seen is greater than on the part
of the male.
