§. Punishment

Extract the profit in all shapes
not a pecuniary alone, but
the most remote and :
especially if contemplated by the offender

Of punishment the use and sole use is – furnishing
motives adequate and no more than adequate to the purpose
of preventing the commission of in future of offences of its a
description similar to that of the individual offence on the occasion
of which application is made of it.

A lot of punishment in so far as it fails in producing the
effect is so much suffering employed in waste.

So all overplus of punishment, over and above what
is productive and necessary to the production of that effect.
