Of Unlawful Reproach —
13 Defamation more mishcievous before indifferent persons than before Friends or Enemies. Defamation, when delivered before indifferent persons,
is in gnereal apt to be more mischievous than when delivered
before his firm friends or determined enemies. 14 Reasons — 1. Friends will not be so ready to credit it 2. They will defend him 3. They will give him to defend himself. 4. Even & crediting it they will not spread it As
to his friends, if they are zealously his friends, in the first
place they will not give credit to the imputation till they
have heard what he has to say to it: in the next place
they will defend him against it in the mean time before
any other persons that may be present: (a) thirdly they
will advertise him of it in order to enable him to defend
himself more effectually than they can do. Fourthly,

manner or measure as to induce them to believe it, it will rest with
