Box 72 contains writings on law and the penal code from the period 1776-1786. It comprises the following:

  • Folios 1 and 2: form part of Bentham's work entitled Of Laws in General which was completed in 1782
  • Folios 3-9: contain marginal outlines for the penal code
  • Folios 20-112: contain material on a variety of offences
  • Folios 113-180: deal with personal injuries
  • Folios 181-186: comprise material dealing with 'offences against oneself' - suicide, self-mutilation, and abortion. Folios 183-186 are in French.
  • Folios 187-205: deal with paederasty
  • Folios 206-210: deal with 'lascivious injuries'
  • 'Folios 211-213 deal with the finding of objects
  • Folio 214: deals with cruelty to animals
  • Folios 215-223: contain an 'Essais', which is written in French
