C
Of Unlawful Reproach
of his acquaintance.+ + See Tit. [Unlawful Defamation] voce [Reputation] Art. 13. In the first respect a man of higher
rank seems to be rather more tender in general, than a
man of lower rank ; though the sensibility of each will
always depend in a great degree upon circumstances in the
original mental temperament of which no account can
be taken. As to the external evils a man is exposed to
suffer by defamation ; to these a man of higher will in
general be somewhat less exposed than a man of lower rank;
since the former will be able to command, partly by means
of his rank, partly by means of the fortune that usually
attends it, those services which the latter can expect only
from affection or esteem.
