Luxury
Absolute idleness is a diminution of the public
wealth. As such it will be considered in Book IV
Title ...
The indirect methods of combating relative idleness
consist in the positive encouragement given to different kinds of industry
and in the [expedients employ'd] for removing all
such obstacles as may oppose themselves to the defense of natural
encouragement which naturally all connected
with the several respective species of industry.] keeping them
as clear as possible from all discouragements. The expedients
relative to this design will be various according
to the various circumstances of different times and countries.
If there be any article sort of luxury which more clearly demands requires to be discouraged than any another other, it
is the luxury of funerals; which impoverish the living
under the vain notion of doing honour to the dead.
